Originally from the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas, self-taught artist Kelly Moore has settled in Santa Fe, NM where he has become known for his expressive paintings of dead cowboys, dark birds and tricksters. He paints on canvas and on board, often painting over canvases he has found at flea markets or garage sales.
Of his work Moore says “I am not really an artist…just someone trying to get through life without falling down so often. And my work is much the same, full of human flaw, imperfections, cuts and lesions…I think being human is quite understated.”
Moore’s dirt floor studio, located in what was once a stable, is filled with doll heads, animal bones, plastic flowers and an assortment of dried paint brushes. His paintings are often surrounded by lettering or abstracted forms, sometimes ghostly and other time almost processional.
